Amazing hair jewellery!

I came across the article below and found it fascinating.  I am really amazed by how Howley has used human hair to create a modern take on jewellery.  The amount of effort and time that has gone in to create the piecesis really unbelieveable and you can really see the attention to detial that she has put into the piece.  If only I had the patience to create such beautiful intricate pieces of art.

A student has won a prize for her collection of necklaces made from human hair. Kerry Howley, 23, spent hours using broken saw blades to cut and weave the delicate strands of hair, donated by her friend's mother. She has so far created five necklaces, with each one taking more than 60 hours to complete. "My friend's mum is Japanese and has hair down to her waist. She only has it cut every five years so she had 30cm cut off the bottom and gave it to me," said Kerry, from Cambridge. "I thought it would be interesting and unusual to make necklaces out of human hair as it's a material we are familiar with and take pride in, but once it is cut off it becomes slightly disgusting."

Work on my final piece each step of the way

For my final piece I am using all the imagery that I have done so far that has been worked into digitally and also by hand and ont he sewing machine and turning it into one big final piece.  Each aspect of the piece will be displayed and worked into the way I want it and with great detail and thought.  I will be documenting my journey from start to finish and below is my starting point.

I have started to work into the six puppet dolls using free machine embroidery.  I have chosen to stitch each doll a different colour and is intricate in detail and very eye catching.  I have used a variety of materials is creating the puppet dolls.  I feel that I have achieved what I wanted to create with them and that they are successful in being individual pieces of art within the bigger picture.

I enjoyed creating and working into the puppet dolls but I did find it very demanding and time

consuming.  In all it took me a few days working back into them.



Drawings fo F.M.P.

I started my Final Major Project with research into old fashioned toys and I did this by visiting a

number of different galleries and museums and from this research gathered I formed the basis

of these drawings below.  Each piece is different and will be forming the foundations of my

further development and the essence of my final artwork.  I have worked on specially

selected backgrounds that were of meaning to each of the pieces of art that I have created.

All of the drawings will form a seperate page which together will make up my sketch book.

This image was created intentionally on the background

chosen and is a mixture of water colour paint ans also acrylic.

This drawing is of an old fashioned soldier toy.  I used lined paper

to draw on with ink being the medium of my choice.  I then stitched the piece

onto the spotted background paper.

This wooden doll was created from an image from a book that really

fascinated me.  I used metallic stitch to draw the doll and also painted

the dolls face using water colour paint to create a different effect

for it in comparison with the body.  This is one of my favourite

drawings overall.

This is one of the first drawings that I created using pencil.  I

drew this image directly from one of the dolls at Blackburn Museum.

This image is simply on white cartridge paper.

The drawing of the puppet was created using pencil but then it

was developed further in photoshop and a filter was added to it

called fresco to give the image an almost chalk and charcoal effect.  This

image was drawn directly from my own puppet.

This is a monoprint.  I used black prinitng ink to create the image

of a teddy onto some white cotton.  This was developed from one

of my original drawings.

This piece containing the rocking horse was created using a multitude

of media.  I used tracing paper painted with gold and drawing inks to create

the background and I used water colour paint to create the horse.  Stitch is also

present in this piece on the horse and also the text is stitched into the piece.

This image of two wooden toys was another of the drawings that I created

at Blackburn Museum using pencil.  I decided to draw the image on lined

paper and I have sewn it onto another piece of paper and then

onto the background that was specially made using gold paint and

drawing inks.

This painting has been created using water colour paint and also

different coloured inks.  I wanted to create a dramatic look for the

face and I feel that this was captured in the image.

The dolls face image has been created onto a collaged background that has had

a wash of white paint over the top of it.  The dolls face has been drawn

out using pencil and then painted onto the paper using water

colour paint.

This piece of the three teddies has been drawn onto brown paper using

black ink and a dip pen.  The inspiration for this piece comes from

one of my original photographs.

This teddy was created on a brown paper background that had a

wash of white paint.  The teddy image was sewn onto the page

and was created using black ink and a dip pen.

This image of the dolls face is a collaged piece of one of the

previous drawings that I have created.  I have used specially

selected paper cut up and collaged over the background.  The

image of the dolls face has been created by photocopying

one of my other images and enlarging it.

Inspirational research for final major project

These are some of the photos that I have took from various gallery visits that I have made at the start of my final major project.  I initially started out carrying research in various galleries and museums and from this I decided to focus my brief around the theme of old fashioned children's toys.  The pictures have been taken in a number of galleries and museums including Blackburn Museum and Gallery, Harris Museum Preston and Manchester Museum.
